Cyberpunk 2077 came out today for all platforms. The game is now confirmed to run at an unlocked frame rate on next-gen consoles but suffers as a result.
The game supports the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X in addition to the new generation consoles: PS5 and Xbox Series. There is a strange technical limitation placed on almost every platform. In the case of the PS4 and PS4 Pro, the game targets 30 FPS but fails to achieve this target especially when roaming around in the Night City.
Meanwhile, the Xbox One and Xbox One X, the performance is beyond terrible, especially on the original Xbox One. The game is seen running at a frame rate as low as 15 FPS and even on the powerful Xbox One X, it fails to hold a steady 30 FPS. CD Projekt Red has already confirmed that the day one patch which is out now is the real deal and there likely isn’t a further update, at least for this week.
This offers a toggle between a stable 30 FPS at a higher resolution on the Xbox Series X and an unlocked 60 FPS with a lower resolution that appears to run at dynamic 4K on both PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The performance of the game on the PS5 is inconsistent with the frame rate struggling to hold 60 FPS and there is no way to lock it at 30, unlike the Xbox Series X. As a result, the controller response is all over the place which is crucial for a game like Cyberpunk 2077.
There is no clear winner in this race here, but we have to give the edge to the Xbox Series X for offering a locked 30 FPS option compared to no choice for the PS5. It does lead to a slightly better controller response because the frame rate is steady in this mode.
But hey, It’s the game launch day, so there is a good chance that CD Projekt Red will work on the performance issues on all platforms in the coming weeks.
